Quality & Editorial Standards

What we test, what we publish, and the thresholds a lot has to clear before it appears on this site.

Chemical thresholds

Free acidity must be at or below 0.30% — well inside the 0.8% legal ceiling for extra virgin. Peroxide value must be at or below 12 mEq O2/kg against a legal maximum of 20. K232 and K270 must sit inside the extra virgin ranges with no indication of refined oil.

Total phenolic content must exceed 250 mg/kg, the threshold at which the recognised claim on protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress applies. Most of our range sits well above it.

Sensory rules

A blind panel of four, at least one IOC-trained, tastes every lot in cobalt glasses. Any detected defect — fusty, musty, winey, muddy, rancid, metallic — disqualifies the lot outright.

Positive attributes are scored on a structured sheet and the median is published on the product page as the intensity rating.

Labelling and transparency

Every product page states the harvest month, the estate, the cultivar, the acidity, the polyphenol figure and the certification body. Where an award refers to a previous harvest, we say so.

We never describe centrifugal extraction as 'cold pressed'. We describe it as cold extraction below 27°C, which is what it is.

Editorial policy

Journal articles are written in-house by named authors with stated qualifications. We do not accept sponsored content, affiliate placements or paid product mentions.

Health statements are limited to claims authorised under Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 and the EFSA opinions underpinning them. Where evidence is suggestive rather than settled, we say so in the text.

Articles are reviewed annually and after any change in FDA or CFIA labelling and health-claim rules. Corrections are made in place with a note.

Reviews

Only verified purchasers may leave a review, and reviews are published unedited apart from removal of personal data or abuse. We do not delete negative reviews and we do not incentivise positive ones.

The harvest letter

Early access to each new harvest, forty-eight hours before release

One letter a month: tasting notes from our own panel, the estates we are visiting, and first refusal on limited single-tank releases.
