The house

A short list, chosen slowly, from groves we have walked

OlivePrestige exists because buying good olive oil in North America is unreasonably difficult. The category is enormous, the labelling is permissive, and the single most important fact about a bottle — when the fruit was picked — is usually missing entirely. A shopper standing in front of thirty bottles has almost no way to tell which one was milled eight weeks ago and which has been sitting in a warehouse since the harvest before last.

Our answer is deliberately narrow. We list fewer than a dozen oils at any time. Each is bought as a single-harvest lot from a named estate, tested independently for free acidity, peroxide value and total phenols, and tasted blind by our panel before it goes on sale. When a lot is finished, the page changes to the next harvest rather than being quietly topped up.

The result is a collection with a point of view: green, structured, unfashionably bitter oils from producers who accept half the yield in exchange for aroma. If you have only ever met supermarket oil, the first spoonful will surprise you. That catch at the back of the throat is oleocanthal, and it is the most reliable signal of quality your palate has.

Medals from panels that taste blind

We cite results only from competitions that judge blind to IOC method and publish their scoring criteria — London IOOC, NYIOOC, Evooleum, Athena and the Concours Général Agricole. A medal proves the producer is capable; the current batch analysis proves what is in your bottle.

Olive regions

Four terroirs, four completely different oils

Cultivar and climate decide almost everything about how an oil tastes. Altitude and cold October nights slow ripening and concentrate phenols; limestone soils and dry summers stress the tree in productive ways. These are the four origins we return to each year.

Health & evidence

What the polyphenol number actually buys you

In the United States and Canada, health claims on food are authorised, not invented. Olive oil containing at least 250 mg/kg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives may state that it contributes to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress, at a daily intake of 20 g. Separately, replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fat contributes to maintaining normal blood cholesterol.

Those are the two claims a North American seller may legitimately make, and both are quantified. Anything broader is marketing. What we can tell you concretely is the number: our oils range from 390 to more than 640 mg/kg total phenols, measured per lot, printed on the product page and re-tested if the producer's analysis is older than three months at bottling.

High-phenolic oil also lasts longer. Those same compounds are consumed protecting the oil from oxidation, which is why an early-harvest bottle stays vivid for months while a low-phenolic one fades. Buy for the number, store it in the dark, and finish it while it is young.

I have bought olive oil professionally for eleven years. The harvest transparency here is better than any importer I have worked with.
